Navigating the Cyber Storm: Strategies for OEM Success

The current state of cybersecurity

There is much preliminary evidence to suggest that cybersecurity will continue to be a sticking point for businesses this year. SdxCentral has recently collated a set of 2024 cybersecurity predictions from leading industry experts, which include the rise of AI-enabled social engineering, an increase in endpoint compromise, and a proliferation of AI scams on social media, among other similarly alarming statements.

The impact of a cyber breach should not be underestimated. Sophos estimated that the  mean recovery cost of a ransomware attack was $1.82 million, an amount which excludes the actual ransom payment.

In order to guard against the rising cyber threat, President Biden introduced Executive Order 14028 in 2021, which mandated multiple national agencies enhance their cybersecurity initiatives. Additionally, in October 2023, a proposal was jointly submitted by NASA, the U.S. Department of Defense and the General Services Administration, calling for the standardization of cybersecurity contractual requirements across Federal organizations. It seems that companies could imminently be fined for having outdated or inadequate cybersecurity systems.

So, not only is poor cybersecurity bad for business, but it is also potentially penalizable under U.S. government regulation.

The OEM opportunity

Although everyone is looking to develop the silver bullet for securing businesses online, it is most likely that cybersecurity will continue to be a competitive, multi-solution space. The market opportunity here is huge: According to MarketsandMarkets, the cybersecurity industry is estimated to grow 10% year on year and be worth $208bn by the end of 2024.

In order to retain and win market share, cybersecurity-focused OEMs need to produce effective solutions that can sustain high service request volumes and be able to identify attack vectors down to the packet level, which is a U.S. government requirement. Whether you are developing a cybersecurity solution for the cloud or an on-premises environment, being able to bring this to market rapidly will be a great advantage. This is where a technology partnership can come in useful.

In recent years, HPE OEM Solutions has helped software-only ISVs go to market with integrated turnkey solutions. Many ISVs are very capable of developing innovative software solutions, but often lack experience in hardware elaboration. This can be a problem if its customers start requesting an integrated hardware solution, or if the company wants to start offering hardware versions of its software product.

Nebulon: Going from software-only to selling integrated, cyber-resilient IT solutions

An example would be cloud-based software company Nebulon. It pioneered smartInfrastructure, an operating platform that delivers a cyber-resilient, public cloud experience on-prem and at scale. Nebulon chose to partner with HPE OEM Solutions to bring smartInfrastructure to market because it needed secure servers on which to embed its software. Consequently, Nebulon built its solution on HPE ProLiant servers, which are protected against malware by both patented Silicon Root of Trust technology as well as the HPE Trusted Supply Chain.

The company was also conscious that its customers needed customized server configurations, which it would not able to achieve internally. By becoming an HPE Virtual-OEM (V-OEM) and outsourcing the hardware component to TD SYNNEX, an HPE-authorized partner, Nebulon is now successfully selling a fully integrated solution that can be delivered and configured worldwide.

Datex: Customizing data encryption solutions for each customer use case

Similarly, data security expert Datex was looking for a hardware provider on which it could integrate its data encryption platform DataStealth. Ultimately, it chose to build on HPE ProLiant servers, which it found to be the most secure and reliable option available. Not only are these servers protected by a multitude of security functions, but the integrated solution is also able to withstand high workload levels 24x7 without any problems. The partnership also enables Datex to configure a DataStealth solution for each customer use case, and draw on HPEโ€™s expertise to test new platform capabilities before bringing them to market.

Take your security solutions to the next level

New cybersecurity risks are emerging every single day. Staying ahead of malicious actors is not impossible, but it will take a lot of effort and experience. Having the support of an OEM technology provider is key to bringing your security innovations to market more quickly and ensuring maximum benefit for your end customers.
